Mr Husam Elghalhud is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with over two decades of experience in the field. Husam specialises in cataract surgery and has performed over 15,000 cataract surgeries over the course of his career, dealing with both straightforward and complex cases and implanting different lens types. Husam has also performed hundreds of laser surgeries (including laser refractive surgeries) and is an expert in the medical retina field, having completed thousands of intravitreal injections for patients with diabetes and age-related macular degeneration.
Husam qualified as a doctor in 1998, and was awarded a number of sub-speciality fellowships, including a cataract and anterior segment fellowship at the prestigious Queen Victoria Hospital in Sussex. He completed his training in London and Kent, working at Moorfields and Kings Hospitals, which gave him a wider knowledge regarding eye issues such as medical retina, neuro ophthalmology, refractive surgery, dry eyes, blepharitis and general ophthalmology. His last NOD cataract audit indicated low complication rates compared to the national average.
Husam also practiced at the Pennine Acute Trust, where he led Retina and Theatre Services, and was the undergraduate supervisor for Manchester University medical students. He also enjoyed teaching the juniors and seniors for cataract surgeries. He went on to develop and improve the trusts he worked at, by improving the cataract complication rates, and implementing innovative treatments such as intravitreal injections for age-related macular degeneration.
