Celebrating World Optometry Day: Supporting Global Vision with Lions Clubs
This World Optometry Day, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of Lions Clubs International and the Recycle for Sight initiative, which is making a real difference in improving global eye health.
Through this programme, patients at SpaMedica hospitals have the opportunity to donate glasses they no longer need after cataract surgery. These glasses are sanitised, graded, and redistributed to individuals around the world who lack access to essential vision care.
Helping Communities See Clearly
With over one million pairs of glasses donated, this initiative is helping people in countries including Chad, Mali, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Nigeria, and Nepal. The Lions Clubs work directly with local eye care professionals and health organisations to ensure people receive the right prescription for their needs.
Brigitte Green MJF, Lions Clubs National Headquarters Manager, shares:
“The personal efforts of individual employees and teams at SpaMedica hospitals across the country have played a key role in supporting those in need around the world. On World Optometry Day, we extend our sincere thanks for their incredible support.
“Partnerships like these help us provide much-needed glasses, in a sustainable way, to people who would otherwise have no access to vision care. This work truly changes the lives of individuals and their families and is helping to shape whole communities.”
For many, receiving a pair of eyeglasses is life-changing, unlocking new opportunities for education, employment, and independence.

Why Vision Care Matters
Tom Fellows, SpaMedica’s Head of Policy and Value Proposition, reflects on the impact of this initiative:
“We are incredibly proud of our teams who have taken the initiative to support causes that improve global eye health. Their commitment to making a meaningful impact is truly inspiring.
“It is important to recognise that the ability to see clearly is life-changing. Those with good vision often take it for granted, but for those without it, the difference can be transformative. We’re honoured to have employees who understand the importance of what Lions Clubs International does and are passionate about ensuring access to eye care for those who need it most.”
Beyond World Optometry Day
At SpaMedica, we are committed to enhancing access to eye health and supporting meaningful initiatives beyond World Optometry Day.
Recently, we donated materials and supplies to support an eye-health mission in Jordan, helping refugees from Syria and Gaza. Additionally, we’ve launched a new partnership with The Macular Society, funding ground-breaking research and vital support services for patients diagnosed with macular disease.
We are incredibly grateful to our colleagues, patients, and partners who help drive these initiatives forward. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact on global eye health.
