Cataract surgery is usually a straightforward procedure, which takes around 20 minutes to complete. Full recovery from cataract surgery typically takes around four to six weeks, after which you can go back to doing everything as normal.
On the day of your surgery, you’ll generally be in hospital for two to three hours, and you’ll be able to go home on the same day.
You’ll be provided with a plastic eye-shield to wear after your operation. You’ll need to keep this on overnight, but it can be disposed of the next morning. Anaesthetic eye drops will be used to numb your eye during surgery. You can expect these to start wearing off within a few hours. It may, however, take a few days for your vision to fully return.
For the first few days after your surgery, it’s normal to have blurred or double vision and watery/gritty eyes. Your eyes may also look red or bloodshot. These side effects will normally subside within a few days, but it can take four-six weeks for your eye to fully heal.
